Message from Alexander von Hildebrand, WHO South East Asia Regional Office ________________________________________________________________________

Dear GF3 e-forum participants,

I learned a lot during my participation to GF2, and met many colleagues. I have followed up with some of them and actually started and finalized a joint activity with one of them. We were able to print and send 2000 "WHO FOS Five key posters" in Malgache language, to our colleague in Madagascar.

To ensure that GF3 is a success and that it goes beyond meeting pairs and coordinating joint actions - which already justifies meeting - we would need to do more at the political level, as also suggested by other during this e-forum. I would encourage the organizers to aim at:

* Having GF become a global alliance of all stakeholders concerned

with the promotion of Food safety. Its main strength would be its informal character

* Ensuring full and open participation of all partners: Governments,

international, regional and national organizations, industry groups, public interest associations, Consumer organizations, scientific associations and representatives of civil society meeting to build partnerships, provide advice and guidance, make recommendations and monitor progress.

* Holding a global meeting every 3 years.

* Having every GF prepare conclusions and (concrete and doable)

recommendations in the shape of a GF Declaration, based on the results of the working groups and to be adopted by acclamation. Latter will also encourage currently skeptical donors to sponsor the event.

* Envisaging how to, maybe at a later stage when GF will need to be

institutionalized, the implementation of GF recommendations can be ensured and evaluated.

Hope this is of some use

Best regards

Alex

Message from Michael Odong, Uganda

Thanks to FAO for the opportunity to send comments on the needs for the GF-3 to be convened. I agree with the continuation of the efforts that will allow Member Countries the opportunities to discuss issues of importance in the facilitation of trade among countries in a better way to protect the health of food consumers.

Comments:

Objectives: It is good to share information as a way to strengthen the food safety structure by working on road maps and putting in place appropriate infrastructure.

Theme:

Discussion should focus more on national food safety system, risk analysis application, food chain approach, dealing with new threat to food safety, building and maintaining effective food system and technical assistance to Member Countries to Build Food Safety Systems.

Time:

1 week

Mr Michael Odong

Fisheries, Uganda
